AN introvert by nature, artist Ong Choon Hoo, 47, speaks through his paintings.
His third solo exhibition at Galeri Seni Mutiara, Whiteaways Arcade in Lebuh Pantai, is entitled Survival of Old Traditions. It reflects the feelings of this unassuming artist.
The exhibition ends on May 6.
Born in Penang, Ong now lives in Bukit Mertajam on the mainland. He was educated at the Han Chiang High School.
His dream is to become a famous artist, and with his passion, diligence and perseverance, Ong has taken another step towards achieving his goal in the challenging art world.
His 32 watercolour paintings mirror his love for nature, landscapes, fishing villages and the heritage homes throughout the country which he scoured for during his travels to reproduce what he saw on paper.
"Nature gives me the inspiration to re-capture the scenes that enchanted me. It is a form of relaxation and solace for me.
"In this exhibition, I try not to be too detailed and prefer to reproduce the subject not so much from what I see as what moved my heart," he said.
Ong opted for lighter and softer colours juxtaposed with equal weight with darker tones and shades to produce a luminous effect that radiate out from the paintings to fascinate the viewer.
"I have always loved to paint in watercolours as it's a more suitable medium to express my feelings. It's also easier to make adjustments to the paintings.
"I usually finish a painting at one go, as I won't be able to find that moment of inspiration again if I were to take a break and continue later."
Ong either paints on the spot, or from photographs he took.
Since rediscovering his passion for art 13 years ago, Ong has participated in many international and local exhibitions in Asia.
Sculptureatwork Sdn Bhd managing director Soon Yee Ling launched the exhibition.
Admission is free. The gallery is open daily from noon to 6pm.
