MASTERLY: The Penang Teachers Art Circle celebrates its 48th jubilee with an exhibition from 40 of its members
GEORGE TOWN: FOR almost half a century, the Penang Teachers Art Circle (PTAC) has been having its anniversary exhibition on a grand scale since its establishment in 1964.
This year's 48th anniversary exhibition was no different with some 40 artists featuring 60 pieces of artworks in oil, watercolour, acrylic, pencil and mixed media, as well as posters and works of photography.
They are being displayed until July 29 at the Penang State Art Gallery, Dewan Sri Pinang.
The teachers are from all ages and include retirees.
Organising chairperson Teh Ee Ming said though many of the teachers may not be great artists, they have devoted time to their hobby despite heavy work schedules.
"The annual exhibition is also to showcase the talents of upcoming artists among younger teachers," said Teh.
"Their contributions have helped to make this exhibition a success.
"Coming together and sharing their talents in an important annual event with their students will spur the the latter to follow in their footsteps," added Teh.
The PTAC was founded by teachers whose initiatives and foresight have paved the way for other practising teachers to join and share a common interest -- art and art education.
Hence the third children's art programme, Jom-Art and Art Education, was held simultaneously at the the exhibition.
The programme consisted of art appreciation and an art activity that allowed children to explore their imagination and creativity.
This year, the children's challenge was creating wire sculptures.
Former teacher and active PTAC member Marie Lim was the guest-of-honour at the event.
Admission is free. Visiting hours is from 9am to 5pm on weekdays.
