THE RETURN: Izmer Ahmad makes a comeback with his ’Sensation of Images’
GEORGE TOWN: AFTER a decade of absence from the art scene, Dr Izmer Ahmad makes a comeback with his first solo exhibition at the Galeri Seni Mutiara on Whiteaways Arcade in Lebuh Pantai.
Trained as an artist, Izmer, 44, is Universiti Sains Malaysia's School of Arts deputy dean.
Perlis-born Izmer is featuring 19 of his artworks, themed Sensation of Images, that were done between 1999 and 2012.
The exhibition ends on Sept 23.
The guest-of-honour at the launch of the exhibition was veteran artist Ismail Hashim, who said Izmer's works exude magic and soul.
"The drawings may look simple in execution, but each work seems to have a life of its own," said Ismail in his opening address.
Izmer obtained his Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Victoria in Canada in 1996.
He later returned to the same university to pursue his doctorate which he obtained in 2008.
Izmer gave a video presentation on his works, explaining what his art is all about.
Izmer mentioned his use of charcoal to draw. He said charcoal is receiving wide acceptance in the art world as a medium, which he is focusing on.
"Most exhibitions feature paintings in colour, so I decided to feature charcoal drawings, which I believe has become an important medium as an art form.
"My recent works in charcoal reflect my perception on the power of images, which can be very potent.
"Small-scale paintings they may be, but they are sophisticated in terms of technique.
"Certain images linger in my mind, and I have to draw them.
"If they evoke interest in my viewers, then I am more than happy," said Izmer.
The gallery is open daily from 11am to 6pm, and admission is free.
