GEORGE TOWN: A five-kilometre heritage walk organised by the Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Society will be held on Sept 23 at the Esplanade here to raise funds for charity projects.
The annual non-competitive event, in conjunction with the anniversary of George Town as a Unesco World Heritage Site, is now in its fourth edition and is held in front of Town Hall at 8am.
Its organising committee chairman Loh Nam Hooi said the society would channel the funds raised to train members in first-aid techniques, pre-hospital case comprising rescue, disaster relief and management.
"Our members must be properly trained to respond to public calls for help in times of emergency.
"At the same time, members of the public are able to enjoy the sights and sounds of George Town though a leisure Sunday walk," Loh said recently.
He said the walk around the heritage enclave in the inner city would include sites like the Khoo Kongsi, Cheah Kongsi, Yeap Kongsi, The Goddess of Mercy Temple, Masjid Kapitan Keling, Dr Sun Yat Sen Penang Base and the St George's Church.
He also said each participant would be charged a registration fee of RM30.
All registration forms must be handed over to the state MRC headquarters in Jalan Grove by Sept 21.
T-shirts will be given out and a lucky draw with exciting prizes like an overseas trip to Taiwan and a spanking new motorcycle will be among the highlights. By Phuah Ken Lin
