‘Baby alive when tossed from apartment’

KUALA LUMPUR: The newborn baby girl, who was found sprawled on the ground floor of Desa Mentari Apartment in Petaling Jaya on Sunday, was alive when she was thrown from the third floor of the apartment block, police said.

Petaling Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Arjunaidi Mohamed said the baby, whose umbilical cord was still attached when she was found by passers-by, had died of head injuries based on the post-mortem result.

The mother was arrested three hours after the incident.

“The woman, a 21-year-old factory worker, has been remanded for a week to facilitate investigations.

“She lives with her family on the third floor of Block One. Apparently, no one in the family knew that she was pregnant. We believe that she tried to cover up the birth by throwing the baby from the window of her flat,” he said.

The baby, believed to be a day old, was found by passers-by about 11am on Sunday. A man, who was repairing his motorcycle about 2m away, said he initially thought someone had thrown a doll.

Police are investigating it as a murder case.
