Court dismisses Rela officer's appeal in bribery case
SEREMBAN: The High Court today dismissed the appeal by a Rela officer who was sentenced to 16 months’ jail and RM40,000 fine for accepting bribes.
Judge Siti Mariah Ahmad upheld the conviction and sentence after ruling that the Sessions Court had convicted Abdul Rahman Mat Yatim, 53, after the prosecution had proved a prima facie case against him.
“You have abused your powers as a Rela officer to threaten your victim for money. This court has no choice but to reject your appeal,” she said, adding that the crime was very serious.
Rahman was charged with soliciting and accepting bribes from Roni Ertika amounting to a total of RM500 at a house in Jalan Peniaga 3, Taman Senawang Jaya, Senawang, and at Restoran Az-Haar Corner between 11pm and 2am on Sept 4, 2006.
The money was an inducement not to hand a foreigner over to the police for having an expired passport.
He was found guilty by the Sessions Court and sentenced in May last year.
Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Fairuz Johari prosecuted while the accused was represented by Siti Huzaifah Abdul Talib and Ardelliza Izmaryanti Shafie.
