OLYMPIC TREAT: Queues up to a mile long for free Baskin Robbins ice cream

KUALA LUMPUR: MALAYSIANS last night were treated to free ice cream at Baskin Robbins' outlets, although the Malaysian  Olympic contingent did not bring home a gold medal from London.

Media Prima Berhad's Olympic initiative Impian Emas Negara (Our Golden Dream) said the Malaysian Olympians had done the country proud with their achievements at the 2012 Olympics.

Impian Emas Negara had earlier pledged to give out free ice cream at Baskin Robbins' outlets nationwide if Malaysia secured its first Olympic gold medal.

Malaysia's top gold medal hope badminton star Datuk Lee Chong Wei fell at the final hurdle when he lost in a gripping match to long-time nemesis Lin Dan last Sunday.

Lee, who put up a good fight, came within two points of securing Malaysia's first ever gold medal.

His final encounter with China's Lin Dan, had, as it was reported on news portals, "united Malaysians of all races" to rally behind and support him in his endeavour to win a gold for the nation.

As pledged by Media Prima Television Networks and Primeworks Studios chief executive officer Ahmad Izham Omar in a statement on Tuesday, the ice cream was given free between 8pm and 10pm.

The offer was available at 61 Baskin Robbins outlets nationwide, excluding two kiosks in Pantai Hospital, Bangsar, and Genting Theme Park. Each Malaysian was entitled to one scoop.

"It was an amazing experience to witness our athletes compete in the world's most prestigious sports event. After seeing their level of commitment and sportsmanship, there is no reason for us not to go ahead with the ice cream giveaway.

"We should all celebrate our heroes who helped the country achieve international glory and, in the process, united us all," said Izham.

At 10 last night, there were still queues, almost a mile long, at most of the outlets, waiting for their free ice cream.

President of Golden Scoop Sdn Bhd, Baskin Robbins' partner in Malaysia, expressed excitement over the large crowd.

"Apart from the free ice cream, early birds were given exclusive vouchers offering the sweetest deals."
