UNITED FRONT: Work with the authorities to ensure peace and harmony, urges Najib

PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak yesterday urged all Malaysians and Muslims to appreciate and realise that the peace and harmony enjoyed today did not come easy.

In his Hari Raya Aidilfitri message, Najib said the government was aware that a developed nation like Malaysia must also be a safe and peaceful country.

"We want a Malaysia that is peaceful and free from threats from within or outside, and neighbourhoods and streets free from crime. A country where its people are safe and peaceful. A country where children can be brought up well."

To ensure peace and harmony, he said there must be a united initiative from the people who were caring towards family, neighbours, friends and Malaysians in general.

"We cannot totally depend on the enforcement authorities to combat crime but rather be caring and contribute in any way possible to help the cause. If we allow crime to go on without taking any punitive action, it will endanger the country's peace and security."

Najib urged the people to change their mindset and adopt the right frame of mind to enhance the facilities needed to strengthen security and enforcement.

He said the government would ensure that all the responsible agencies would be more effective and efficient in combating crime.

"We are aware that new preventive measures are needed to combat crime, coupled with dynamic administrators, a higher accountability, a better organisational structure, more training and modern equipment."

Najib said Muslims here were fortunate that they were living in a country that was continuously achieving success and growth, although many countries were undergoing political unrest and economic crisis.

Despite such global uncertainty and the financial crisis, he said Malaysia remained steadfast by enjoying good financial growth, peace and harmony, as well as ushering in various festivals celebrated by different races, reflecting the unity in the country.

Najib also said Muslims must respect and appreciate the sacrifices made by the security forces, which ensured the people continued to enjoy peace and harmony. He also urged Muslims to retain the open house tradition that had become a unique feature of Malaysian culture.
