AN illegal dumpsite near a river along Jalan Baling-Kupang, Kedah, is not only an eyesore, but also poses a health hazard to residents.
A resident, who wished to be identified only as Hasnah, said she was worried that the site would become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
She said the dumpsite was a few metres from the roadside opposite the Baling Rakan Muda Complex.
“Those who throw their garbage there might think it is okay to do so because the site is hidden from view, but they do not consider the threat to residents.
“I urge the authorities to clean up the area and put up a sign to stop people from throwing rubbish there.
“The site is just across the Rakan Muda Complex, which hosts events for Baling district, so the dumpsite is not good for the town’s image,” she said.
A Baling District Council spokesman said it would clear the dumpsite.
He said the council would investigate the claim and seek help from the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation to clean up the area.
“We will put up a sign to prevent people from dumping rubbish there.”
The spokesman said the council had set up a Whats-App line for people to report issues. Those with complaints or wish to seek help from the council can send a message to 019-2751900.
