OVERLOADED vehicles are causing cracks on the road near Tanah Rata, Cameron Highlands, claims resident and environmental activist Ramakrishnan Ramasamy.
“Vehicle overloading is not new.
“But exceeding a vehicle’s maximum permissible weight is not only a danger to the driver and other road users, it is also an offence.”
The affected portion of the road, which is on a hillslope, could collapse as the embankments had shown cracks with water seeping from the ground, he said.
“This could mean that the soil under the road is being eroded.”
Ramakrishan said he had lodged a report with the Public Works Department (PWD) several days ago but no action had been taken.
He urged PWD to check the area immediately.
When contacted, Cameron Highlands district engineer Eow Thein Ewe said any report on road damage would be looked into by PWD.
“Any complaints on road damage can be forwarded to the local PWD office,” he added.
The Cameron Highlands district engineer can be reached at 05-491 1105 or via e-mail at email@example.com.
He declined further comment.
