PEOPLE who travel on ferries between Pengkalan Kubor in Tumpat and Takbai on the Thai side are urging the authorities to ensure boat operators on Sungai Golok comply with safety requirements.
Passenger Noor Hidayah Abdul Wahab, 32, said she travelled to Takbai recently and saw many passengers were not wearing life jackets.
“The ferry operator did not ensure passengers wore life jackets,” said the mother of two from Kota Baru.
Another ferry user, who wanted to be identified only as Siti Aisyah, said the authorities should conduct more checks to ensure ferry operators adhered to safety regulations.
Checks by Actionline showed that there were two passenger ferries that plied the river every day.
Pengkalan Kubor marine commanding officer Assistant Superintendent Ahmad Amri Abdul Rahman said marine boats would conduct more checks to ensure safety rules were followed by ferry operators and passengers.
He said operations were conducted every day, covering the 21km from Kuala Takbai in Tumpat to Kubang Pak Hitam in Pasir Mas.
“This is to ensure the two operators follow safety regulations.”
