Henkel acquires Shiseido Professional hair business, brands in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: Henkel has acquired the Shiseido Professional hair business in Malaysia, including leading professional hair brands, such as Sublimic and Primience, under the licensed Shiseido Professional brand.

Henkel Consumer Brands general manager for Malaysia and Singapore Richard Gan said the addition of the Shiseido Professional brand reinforces the company's position as a premium hair powerhouse in Malaysia.

"It is an exciting milestone to be able to offer our salon partners a unique combination of both western and Asian hair beauty solutions through our Schwarzkopf Professional and newly added Shiseido Professional brands," said Gan.

While Schwarzkopf Professional is a trusted, global expert in hair colour innovation and trends, Shiseido Professional creates holistic experiences that connect inner and outer beauty through its high-performance J-beauty solutions and the research and development (R&D) capabilities in premium hair and scalp care, anti-hair loss, styling and perm.

According to Henkel, the acquisition closing in Malaysia and Taiwan on January 1, 2023, is the final step in the acquisition process of the Shiseido Professional business by the company in the Asia-Pacific region.

On July 1, 2022, Henkel closed the Shiseido Professional acquisition in China, Japan, Korea, Singapore and Thailand.

In fiscal 2021, Shiseido Professional reported more than 100 million euros in sales and employed around 500 people.

Through the acquisition, Henkel said it had become a significant player in the hair professional business in the Asia-Pacific region.

"This includes having a significantly stronger market position in Japan and China as well as establishing a presence in South Korea and a leading position in Thailand.

"With Asia-Pacific as a base for growth and innovation, a J-beauty innovation hub will be set up in Tokyo, focusing on product development and ingredient formulation for consumers in the region," it said.

The Professional hair business of Henkel Consumer Brands, which generates sales of more than 1 billion euros, holds leading market positions in various international market segments.

The business is among the top three beauty companies worldwide. It offers a broad portfolio of hair care, hair styling, and colour brands exclusively for hairdressers, such as Schwarzkopf Professional, Bonacure, Igora Royal and Authentic Beauty Concept.
