Nurul Izzah invited to co-head secretariat to help Finance Minister's Advisory Committee

KUALA LUMPUR: The Advisory Committee to the Finance Minister has invited Nurul Izzah Anwar to jointly head a secretariat to support the committee's operations.

This was decided during the committee's maiden meeting on Friday.

The Advisory Committee also outlined its primary roles as a result of the meeting.

On Jan 29, Nurul Izzah revealed that she had been officially appointed senior adviser on economics and finance to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Jan 3 this year.

Tan Sri Hassan Marican, in his capacity as chairman of the Advisory Committee,  had invited Nurul Izzah to co-head the secretariat together with Khairil Anuar Ramli, the committee said in a statement today.

The meeting was chaired by Hassan, who is also adviser to Petronas, and was attended by the other members of the committee.

They were Datuk Amar Abdul Hamed Sepawi, chairman of Sarawak Energy Bhd; Datuk Ahmad Fuad Md Ali, executive chairman of FPSO Ventures Sdn Bhd; Datuk Dr Rajah Rasiah, distinguished professor of economics at the Asia Europe Institute of University Malaya;  and Dr Yeah Kim Leng, professor of economics at Sunway University Business School.

The committee's primary roles are, among others, to advise the Finance Minister on ways and means to increase the nation's revenue base and reduce the operating expenditure.

It will also advice the Finance Minister on matters related to:

* subsidies, including reviewing and restructuring existing subsidies, and the provision of more holistic social protection,

* government-linked companies, including determining their relevance in the current context and consolidating them where appropriate, and

* national debt and good governance.

"The Advisory Committee reports directly to the Finance Minister, and shall meet as frequently as possible depending on requirement," it said.
