Pos Malaysia first logistic firm to commit to net zero carbon emission

KUALA LUMPUR: Pos Malaysia Bhd has rolled out a sustainability roadmap to reduce its carbon footprint with the target of net zero carbon emission by 2050.

Pos Malaysia is the first logistic company in the country to do so.

The national postal company laid down six initiatives comprising delivery methods, fleet optimisation, green buildings, waste management, sustainable packaging and digital learning as part of its sustainability transformation.

Group chief executive officer Charles Brewer said by 2025, Pos Malaysia was committed to reducing 30 per cent reduction in its scope 1 and scope 2 emissions.

The company also plans on ensuring a 50 per cent recycling rate of operational waste, 80 per cent of recyclable materials for all packaging and 50 per cent of training to be done digitally.

Brewer added that Pos Malaysia was going to transform its fleet to electric, retrofit buildings and continue using renewable energy.

In achieving zero net emissions, the company had introduced electric motorcycles in the capital city and planned to expand the numbers with additional 200 electric motorcycles by September this year.

"By 2025, 28 per cent of the entire fleet will be electric, and 100 per cent by 2030. Along with the electric fleet, Pos Malaysia will be utilising best-in-class telematics to improve driver safety and further reduce emissions," said Brewer at the launch of Pos Malaysia Sustainability Roadmap here today.

The electrification of the fleet will reflect on the impact of fuel consumption of 1.2 million litres of petrol and 4.0 million litres of diesel.

In terms of increasing energy efficiency, three of Pos Malaysia's facilities are equipped with solar panels that could generate an estimated three million kWh of electricity annually.

The company is set on retrofitting 28 of its buildings by 2025 and adding solar panels to 426 buildings by 2030.

Brewer said Pos Malaysia had managed to utilise five per cent of energy from solar panels, translateling to around the same percentage of savings on their electricity bills.

"Apart from its carbon emission reduction commitment, Pos Malaysia is also looking to recycle 50 per cent of operational waste by leveraging technology and reducing overall waste generation.

"We aim to play a part in the circular economy by increasing renewable and recyclable inputs for all packaging products to 80 per cent and migrate 50 per cent of staff training to a digital platform," he said.
