airasia SuperApp says has IATA licence to sell tickets of any carriers including Malaysia Airlines

KUALA LUMPUR: airasia SuperApp has clarified that its OTA (online travel agency) platform holds a travel agent licence.

airasia SuperApp is also an International Air Transport Association-accredited agent authorised to sell flights from any airline on its app and website.

"As an accredited OTA, airasia SuperApp's flight inventories come from both established partner aggregators as well as direct airline partners, a common OTA industry practice," its acting chief executive officer Mohamad Hafidz Mohd Fadzil said in a statement today.

He added that airasia SuperApp would continue to sell flights from any airlines including those that it does not have a direct relationship through its established partner aggregators and consolidators.

The statement comes after Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) group managing director Captain Izham Ismail confirmed yesterday that the company had filed an injunction against airasia SuperApp early last year to stop the latter from selling Malaysia Airlines ticket on its platforms.

Izham said there was no commercial agreement signed between Malaysia Airlines and airasia SuperApp that allows the latter to sell its flight tickets.

airasia SuperApp clarified that the sale of Malaysia Airlines' ticket on its website and app were taken from inventories supplied by its established partner aggregators.

Mohamad Hafidz said the flight fares and fare class (economy or business) information was supplied directly by its partner aggregators without any intervention from airasia SuperApp.

He added that the legal action that Malaysia Airlines had taken against airasia SuperApp was premised on allegations of potential trademark infringement and passing off, and unrelated to inventory supply.

"We continue to call on Malaysia Airlines and other airlines to partner directly with the airasia SuperApp to achieve better efficiency and performance, and will be happy to move our conversation forward on working together to offer Malaysians the best value when it comes to travel, and win together," Mohamad Hafidz said.

Mohamad Hafidz also said airasia SuperApp was working with world-renowned airline brands including Etihad Airways, Turkish Airlines, All Nippon Airways, Air New Zealand, Citilink, KLM, Air France, Bangkok Airways as its direct airline partner.

The company is offering these airlines' flights on the airasia SuperApp OTA platform.
