#TECH: Targus offers eco-conscious laptop bag

LAPTOP cases and mobile computing accessories brand, Targus recently announced a release of its latest collection of EcoSmart laptop bags, the first in its thirty-five years history.

Its Cypress EcoSmart Collection is certified by the Global Recycled Standard (GRS), and features more recycled components.

This is in line with the company's aim to reduce plastic bottles destined for landfills.

THREE IS NOT CROWDED

The Cypress EcoSmart Collection encompasses 11 products including backpacks, sleeves and slipcase.

Of all the models, I was lucky to get my hands on the 15.6 inch Cypress EcoSmart Convertible backpack and what's interesting about this model is that it can be used for three different purposes – backpack, crossbody and a briefcase.

WHAT I LIKE

First of all, the bag certainly doesn't look or feel like it was made from 24 recycled plastic bottles. It feels like real fabric, just as advertised where the bottles are cleaned, flaked, re-polymerised and spun into fibre that is woven into the fabric.

Bored of black, I went with a lighter tone of grey.

Initially, I was worried that the bag would look bulky considering its size, but because of its side zipper configuration, the bag actually looks slender with the things I put in there.

Being a 15.6 inch, the bag is also suitable for those large and heavy gaming laptops and having a zipper on the side helps.

Personally, it is easier for me to take out my laptop this way, without having to pull it from top of the bag.

The bag's ergonomic shoulder straps is a clever design. Don't let the not-so-thick straps fools you because trust me, it is comfortable and do not pinch on your skin nor does it make you sweaty. So comfortable, I even used it as my weekend bag.

The bag also comes with a shoulder strap for your briefcase and trolley straps for rolling luggage as well as top and side comfort handles too.

The bag fits my daily use, but I wish it had water bottle holders and a small pocket on the outside for quick access to my hand sanitiser.

REPURPOSING PLASTICS

Targus has been turning bottles into bags since 2009, but it is currently on a journey to create products that are altogether eco-friendlier and more thoughtful, from manufacturing to distribution.

The Cypress Collection is the company's third collection under its EcoSmart line which has sold over half a million units.

With this collection, plastic bottles are reborn to make everything from the bag lining to the body and trim, without compromising the brilliant flexible working features, security and ergonomic comfort customers expect from the brand.

This latest collection improves on previous award-winning designs by incorporating more recycled materials into the bags, but also tracking those materials through the GRS programme.

Targus' vice president of global design and innovation, Joanne Sessler said: "Sustainability is complicated. There are a lot of companies making claims – but they can't back it up. For us, it's really important that we do it in the right way.

"By being GRS Certified, we are able to trace the yarn fibre back to the recycling system it came from as well as the people who were making the yarn. So, we know the entire process of the material's production and know that it is being made as sustainably as possible," she said.

VERDICT

Just like most laptop bags in the market, the Cypress EcoSmart Convertible backpack is padded too. Despite its slim appearance, it is actually very comfortable for long-time wear, as well as serving its purpose in protecting the laptop.
