#TECH: What were the most popular videos on YouTube in the United States this year?

IT seems that American YouTube users have a soft spot for emotional content.

According to YouTube's report "2022 A Year On YouTube," unveiled this Thursday, December 1, the most popular video on the platform in the United States was none other than Technoblade's heartbreaking farewell video.

The YouTuber first came to fame for sharing his "Minecraft" adventures on his YouTube. Stricken with cancer, the streamer passed away in June 2022 at the age of 23, just one year after his diagnosis.

In the video titled "So long nerds," published on July 1, the father of the streamer, whose real name was Alex, announced the death of his son and read the last words he wanted to address to his subscribers.

The video has accumulated over 87 million views. On the occasion of the ninth anniversary of the creation of his channel, YouTube created an "easter egg": by searching for "Technoblade" in the search bar, users can then read the suggestion "did you mean Technoblade never dies."

The second most popular video on the platform this year in the United States was that of Will Smith slapping Chris Rock, via the Guardian News channel.

During the Oscar ceremony, the actor went up to the stage after the comedian, who hosted the event, made a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith and proceeded to give him a slap that shocked Hollywood and much of the world.

The streamer Dream made it into the top three with a video in which he finally reveals his face, after hiding it for years.

As far as creators are concerned, YouTuber MrBeast, known for elaborate stunts, comes in first place in the United States. One of his videos is among the most popular videos of the year in the country.

The platform also unveiled the top 10 most popular video Shorts in the country. YouTube launched its new format to compete with TikTok. The Shorts video "Diver Cracks Egg at 45 ft Deep," where a diver films himself cracking an egg at the bottom of the ocean, has garnered over 250 million views in just 10 months.

"Altogether, viewership of the Top Trending Videos surpassed last years: These 10 videos were viewed more than 650 million times over 55 million hours. The channels behind them total more than 225 million subscribers," noted YouTube.
