With women in mind, local fashion brand Hanya believes that there is more to fashion than just the pieces. The brand aspires to empower women with its curated collections alongside words of affirmations and reminders on its tags and packaging.
Recently celebrating its fourth birthday, the fashion label also has a clear goal to carry out its role in aiming towards sustainability. Hanya puts in a lot of thought and effort in minimising waste as part of its sustainable practices.
Not only does it eliminate single use packaging and recycle its own production waste, Hanya also offers an exclusive upcycled category which repurposes unsold items which have remained in its inventory for more than 12 months.
Some of the brand's past collections which experienced low sell-through rates (STR) are given a second life, a second chance, and a second home.
Launched in early 2020, Hanya's Upcycle Collection features designs which have been revived with added embellishments, improved enhancements, or completely rebirthed as new styles altogether so that the fabrics do not end up being disposed in burning landfills.
Since its inception, two upcycle collections have been launched and well-received by customers.
"Some of these items have remained on our shelves for almost a year, and the industry practice is to dispose and burn them. But it hit me that this is an opportunity – rather than disposing it and harming our environment, my design team and I breathe new life into these pieces and create a category that is aligned with our values," says Hanya's co-founder Tan Veen Dee.
Upcycling is a core value that Hanya upholds. Although it is far from completely eradicating the harmful side effects of fast fashion, this is an initiative on the label's part towards a greener manufacturing practice.
