#Showbiz: Heavy floods wreck artistes' homes, property

KUALA LUMPUR: The recent heavy downpour which led to major flooding around the Klang Valley had affected many Malaysians including local artistes.

The unprecedented deluge was no laughing matter for comedian Ebby Yus as the dream home that he had been working on to complete for the past three decades in Kuala Langat was destroyed by the gushing waters.

It was reported that the brick and wooden house built on a half-acre piece of land was already 90 per cent completed and had cost the artiste close to RM200,000 in damages.

"This has been my dream home for over 30 years since I got started in the entertainment industry.

"Every time I received payment for an acting job, I would put a portion towards this house.

"The last time I got paid for the sitcom Jenaka Kampung Kalut (JKK), I settled the balance of the development project for the house," he said in a news report yesterday.

Ebby who had been renting a place in Kampung Baru for the past 20 years added: "I accept this fate."

Meanwhile, singer Yantzen was transported via boat by the Armed Forces (ATM) to a temporary flood evacuation centre (PPS) in a school at Batu 12 Hulu Langat yesterday afternoon.

According to news reports, the artiste who has been residing in Taman Sungai Serai Tambahan for the past five years said that he had lost 90 per cent of his belongings to the flood waters.

"Everything happened so fast. Previously, the flash floods had only affected the area close to the river. The waters have never entered our houses before," he said.

For singer Ezad Lazim who was returning from a show in Kedah, he had the shock of his life when he was denied entry to his housing area at Kota Warisan in Sepang, Selangor on Saturday.

It was reported that the singer and his wife arrived in Kuala Lumpur at 9pm and had to stay over at his in-law's home in Seri Kembangan instead.

"I was informed by my neighbour that our car at home had become submerged. I feel sad that we didn't have a chance to save our belongings at home since our neighbours were able to move their stuff from the ground floor upstairs," he said.

Popular nasyid group Rabbani was also not spared from the destruction of property brought on by the heavy torrents.

Its member Azadan Abdul Aziz said that the floods had wrecked the group's sound system and lighting equipment which was kept in storage at Pusat Latihan Darul Adnin in Meru, Selangor.

"The main bulk of our gear was kept here in order to save cost due to the Covid-19 situation and the glum economy.

"We never expected a flood this bad. This has never happened before," he said in a news report yesterday.

Talking about the unfortunate situation he added that it was a small matter in comparison to the suffering that others were experiencing.

"We accept this fate but what's more important are the lives at stake. When I see others suffering, the old and children who have to climb up onto roofs, I don't think our problems are that much of a burden compared to theirs.

"They are the ones who should get attention and help," he said.
