KUALA LUMPUR: Popular rock band Kugiran Masdo has been listed as the Malaysian artiste with the most streams on Spotify for the period between Jan 1-6.
The retro music outfit beat bigger named artistes like Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza, Search and Hujan by garnering a total of 1.481 million streams on the popular music streaming platform.
The rest of the Top 10 list was made up of Yuna with 1.136 million streams, Aisha Retno (1.098 million), Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza (488,000), Exists (301,000), YonnyBoii (300,000), Iklim (297,000), Hujan (257,000), Search (227,000) and Ukays (212,000).
Kugiran Masdo's lead singer and rhythm guitarist Ali Sariah said that the band's songs became quite popular after the group started to develop a presence in Indonesia.
"Masdo's songs are getting hot in Indonesia at the moment. It all started with the tune Dinda and also Janji Manis which went viral on Tik Tok. So the effect can be seen in the increase of listeners on all of the digital platforms.
"Our latest plan is to head over to Indonesia for a promotional tour that will also see us performing on entertainment shows over there," he said in a Harian Metro report yesterday.
Ali added that the group planned come out with a new single for its fans.
"What's certain is that we are planning to come up with a brand new single for fans including those in Indonesia.
"We are not concerned with building up a fast or slow momentum with the release of the song. If there is rezeki for us to blow up in popularity, then it will happen," he said.
The singer added that he was grateful that the songs of Kugiran Masdo had unexpectedly captured the hearts of fans in Indonesia.
"We had entered the market in Indonesia beginning in October and from there on our songs were slowly accepted by the fans there.
"Whatever the case, our new single will retain the same musical concept as our previous tracks. But there might be changes for future releases since, as musicians, we would not want to produce the same thing over and over again," he said.
Kugiran Masdo, which is completed with guitarist Asmawi, bassist Putu Ceri, drummer Am and keyboard player Chakam, thanked fans in a post on its official social media account yesterday.
It read: "Thank you to the millions of listeners no matter where you are. Please continue listening."
In another post, the band posted a picture of the Recording Industry of Malaysia's Top 10 most streamed singles in Malaysia chart, which listed two of its tracks.
For Week 52, covering Dec 24-30 of last year, Janji Manis took the top spot while Dinda made it to No. 8.
