#Showbiz: Namewee is back, arrest warrant lifted

KUALA LUMPUR: Controversial Taiwan-based singer Wee Meng Chee or Namewee is back in town, as an arrest warrant against him has been lifted.

The 38-year-old from Muar uploaded a photo of himself arriving at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on Instagram last Tuesday.

In his caption he said: "Finally back to my homeland. Long time no see."

He added: "The international arrest warrant has been lifted. I finally won't have to face arrest."

Namewee was referring to the police report lodged against him in December 2020 over his film Babi, which allegedly contained racism.

The controversial 2020 satire was a critique of bigotry in Malaysian society especially amongst youths.

Last March, Namewee was detained by police upon his return from Taiwan and taken to the airport's police station for questioning.

He remained in Malaysia until July, after which he returned to Taiwan to continue working on projects.

Besides celebrating Chinese New Year with his family, Namewee is promoting his latest film, Nasi Lemak 1.0, the sequel to his 2011 film Nasi Lemak 2.0.

Nasi Lemak 1.0 will be released in Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore on Jan 27.
