#Showbiz: I'm not racist, says Namewee

KUALA LUMPUR: Singer-songwriter, actor and director Namewee said that he had no intention of courting controversy through his works which were misconstrued by certain parties as touching on sensitivities and being racist.

The 38-year-old artiste from Muar, Johor said that he had all this while only highlighted current issues that affected society in his creative endeavours.

He said this was done in order to get people to talk about things that would hopefully eventually lead to unity and harmony as the end goal.

"There are people who accuse me of upsetting sensitivities. But what I bring up in my works be they in my songs, music videos or movies are real and relevant social issues.

"My intention is to get people to talk about and discuss these matters in order for solutions to be found down the line," he said in a recent interview in conjunction with the release of his latest movie, Nasi Lemak 1.0.

Namewee whose real name is Wee Meng Chee added that he was far from being a racist and hoped that people would not be quick to judge him before actually checking out his works.

"Certain people hurl a lot of negative labels against me without even watching my movies or content. I hope Malaysians will actually check out my work first so that they don't get the wrong idea about what I do," he said.

Talking about Nasi Lemak 1.0, Namewee said that it was a movie made for all Malaysians. The comedy is a prequel to Nasi Lemak 2.0 which became a hit after its release in 2011.

"The story, jokes and message in the movie are very relatable to Malaysians and those in this region. The movie will also be released in Singapore and Brunei," he said.

Aside from Namewee, the movie also stars Datuk AC Mizal, Datuk David Arumugam, Wak Doyok, Karen Wong, Yumi Wong, Saiful Apek, Yassin Yahya, Delimawati, Sanjna Suri, Vikar and Dennis Lau.

Nasi Lemak 1.0 opens in cinemas nationwide tomorrow.
