#Showbiz: TV producers urge Finas to make pitching sessions more transparent

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Television Producers' Association (PTVM) has called on the National Film Development Corporation (Finas) to give reasons for rejecting television projects suggested by producers in pitching sessions.

PTVM president Datuk Jurey Latiff Rosli said that Finas ought to be more transparent when discussing ideas for television projects with documentary and drama producers.

"If Finas explains why it rejected a certain proposal by a producer, this producer would understand the dos and don't's of his future proposals," said Jurey in an interview with Berita Harian Online today.

Jurey and PTVM members recently had a meeting with Finas chief executive officer Professor Dr Md Nasir Ibrahim at his office in Kompleks Studio Merdeka, Hulu Klang, Selangor.

They discussed several issues affecting television producers and Md Nasir assured them that Finas would do its best to resolve the problems faced by producers.

Jurey also said that Finas ought to provide sufficient funds via its Digital Content Fund (DKD) for producers to penetrate the regional or global television market.

"Giving funds for producers to come up with works for local television stations is not enough. Finas should encourage producers to have joint ventures with television stations from neighbouring countries, as this will make homegrown works go global," he said.

Jurey added that Finas should encourage television producers to become association members, because as members they could effectively boost quality content on the small screen by sharing their ideas with other members.

"Many companies are still not association members. Out of 800 companies that attend Finas pitching sessions, only 200 of them are PTVM members."

Jurey suggested that Finas make it compulsory for production companies to be association members before they sought funds for their latest projects.
