#Showbiz: New 'Squid Game' reality show in the works

KUALA LUMPUR: A new reality TV competition based on the global hit series Squid Game is currently being developed by Netflix.

According to Soompi, the popular streaming platform made the announcement yesterday where 456 competitors will be facing off over the course of 10 episodes to win a grand prize of US$4.56 million (about RM20.16 million).

The original Squid Game which premiered on September 2021 was an international surprise hit and became Netflix's biggest show.

It starred Lee Jung Jae and Park Hae Soo who played two down-on-their-luck childhood friends that end up participating in a mysterious survival game for the chance to win 45.6 billion won (about RM156.2 million).

Eventually, the participants discover that there's more at stake than just the prize money as losers are eliminated in gruesome ways.

However, the upcoming reality show dubbed Squid Game: The Challenge will not see contestants who fail meeting fatal consequences.

But like the hit South Korean series, they will be taking part in the childhood games featured in Squid Game.

There will also be brand new games added by Netflix to intensify the excitement levels.

Senior vice president of Netflix, Brandon Riegg, said: "The fascinating story and symbolic imagery of director Hwang Dong Hyuk's Squid Game wowed the entire world."

"We will be transforming this fictional world into reality.

"The biggest competition ever will be filled with nerve-wrecking thrills and twists and 456 real competitors will set off on this journey.

"We hope fans of the drama will join this fascinating and unpredictable journey," he said.
