#Showbiz: BTS' 'Proof' debuts at No.1 on Billboard 200 with biggest US sales week of any group this year

KUALA LUMPUR: K-Pop titan BTS continues to garner success with its latest release which represents the international music outfit's sixth No.1 album on the US Billboard 200 chart.

According to Soompi, Billboard officially announced yesterday that the popular seven-member group's new anthology album, Proof, had debuted at the top spot of Billboard's Top 200 Albums chart, which represents the weekly ranking of the most popular albums in the USA.

The release was said to have achieved the biggest US sales week for any album by a group for the year 2022 so far despite being mostly made up of the K-Pop juggernaut's previously released hit songs.

Overall, it comes in as the second-biggest sales amount after the debut week of solo English artiste Harry Styles' third studio album, Harry's House.

Luminate (formerly MRC Data) said that, "Proof earned an impressive 314,000 equivalent in album units during the week ending on June 16."

"The album's total score consisted of 266,000 traditional album sales, 12,000 track equivalent album (TEA) units and 36,000 streaming equivalent album (SEA) units, which translates to 52.84 million on-demand audio streams in the album's first week," it said.

The music and entertainment data analytics company added that the over 259,000 amount of traditional album sales achieved by Proof were in CD sales.

This makes it largest sales week for an album on CD in the US since Adele's 30, which sold 378,000 CDs in its first week last year.

In terms of the pricing differences, Billboard said that, "The vast majority of the CD sales for 30 came from the US$11.98 (RM53) and US$13.98 (RM62) editions."

For Proof, two CD variants are available, mainly the US$24 (RM106) version and a US$70 (RM308) version.

The album also marks BTS' sixth album to enter the particular chart at No.1, which makes the K-Pop outfit the first and only Korean artiste so far to top the Billboard 200 with six different albums.

BTS' first topped the chart back in 2018 with Love Yourself: Tear, before garnering similar success with Love Yourself: Answer, Map Of The Soul: Persona, Map Of The Soul: 7, BE and most recently, Proof.

Aside from that, only 15 non-English language albums have ever peaked at No.1 in the history of the Billboard 200 chart, with six of those releases belonging to BTS.
