#Showbiz: 'Mat Kilau' overtakes Hollywood films collecting RM23.3 million in a week

KUALA LUMPUR: Historical action film Mat Kilau, the story of a real-life Malay nationalist who fought British colonialism in Pahang, has been "beating" Hollywood releases in cinemas.

In just a week, the film directed by Syamsul Yusof, has collected RM23.3 million, the first Malay movie to attain such a feat.

In an Instagram post yesterday, Syamsul said: "Mat Kilau has been doing great, reaching No.1 in the box office charts ahead of Hollywood films as Minions, Jurassic World: Dominion, Elvis and Top Gun: Maverick.

"It's got an amazing RM23.3 million in seven days, a record for Malay films."

The RM8 million Mat Kilau which stars Datuk Adi Putra in the title role premiered on June 23 and is produced by Studio Kembara.

The other stars of Mat Kilau include Beto Kusyairy, Fattah Amin, Johan As'ari, Wan Hanafi Su, Yayan Ruhian, Datuk Jalaluddin Hassan, Datuk Rahim Razali, Namron, Shaharuddin Thamby, Ellie Suriaty Omar, Geoff Andre Feyaerts and A. Galak.
