KUALA LUMPUR: The latest batch of KLPAC's Theatre for Young People (T4YP) programme will be presenting the short German play The Exception And The Rule (Die Ausnahme und die Regel) at the venue's Pentas 2 from Sept 29 to Oct 2.
The experimental and highly interactive texted work, which explores themes such as exploitation, matters of class, justice, and invites the audience to examine the systems that keep them running, will be staged as the T4YP 2022 ensemble's Final Showcase.
It will feature a rotating cast that changes from show to show with flexible seating and requires the audience to participate in and engage with the performance.
The Exception And The Rule is one of several Lehrstücke (Teaching plays) that German playwright Bertolt Brecht wrote around 1929.
The play tells the story of a rich merchant, who must cross the fictional Jahi Desert to close an oil deal. During the trip the class differences between him and his working-class porter are shown.
Directed by Tung Jit Yang, the production will feature the T4YP 2022 ensemble which includes Adya Soraya, Alissa Rosly, Debbie Yim, Khadijah Malek, LeonieTunez, Nikita Kothari and Samantha Wen Xin. Launched in 2008, the T4YP programme is now the longest-running English language youth theatre training programme in Malaysia.
It provides those between 18 and 25 with almost 300 hours of intensive and holistic theatre training, free of charge, through masterclasses by the industry's top experts, mentorship and performance opportunities.
Since 2008, 166 young thespians have benefited from the programme and T4YP has toured to Sabah, Singapore and Russia.
T4YP has been a regular feature in past editions of the Asian Youth Theatre Festival and Yayasan Sime Darby Arts Festival.
