#Showbiz: Anna May Wong becomes first Asian American on US currency

KUALA LUMPUR: Chinese American screen legend Anna May Wong now has her image on United States currency.

BBC News reported today that Wong will be part of an on-going effort to feature notable women in American quarters titled The American Women Quarters Programme.

Wong, the first Chinese American film star in Hollywood is the fifth and final woman to be featured on the coin this year.

Her quarter will enter circulation next Monday, with her image on one side and the image of the first American President George Washington on the other.

US Mint director Ventris Gibson said: "Wong championed increased representation and more multi-dimensional roles for Asian American actors and actresses.

"This quarter is designed to reflect the breadth and depth of her accomplishments."

Wong was born Wong Liu Tsong in Los Angeles in 1905 to Chinese immigrants.

She was cast in her first role at 14 as an extra in The Red Lantern. She had her first lead role in The Toll Of The Sea in 1922.

Wong appeared in more than 60 films and was the first Asian American to have a leading role in a television show, The Gallery Of Madame Liu-Tsong.

She was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame in 1960, and died the following year aged 56.

Gemma Chan of Crazy Rich Asians and Marvel's Eternals will soon portray Wong in a biopic about her life.

The American Women Quarters Programme began this year and will feature five women each year until 2025.
