#Showbiz: Vidio beats Netflix as the more popular streaming choice in Indonesia

KUALA LUMPUR: While it may not be as familiar to everyone globally, the streaming platform Vidio is leading the market in Indonesia.

According to a recent news report in Rest Of World website, Vidio was established in 2014 and its success in the republic has been due to several factors including a lower subscription fees than Netflix – with the minimum fee priced at only IDR29,000 (RM8.80) for a single screen access to most of its original series.

Besides the competitive prices, Vidio's catalogue which highlights local and sports contents is also a winning combination, says Vidio's CEO Sutanto Hartono.

Vidio is the fastest-growing streaming service in Indonesia, according to Media Partners Asia's August 2022 report.

It began its ascent in 2017 after securing the rights to broadcast the South-east Asian Games, which attracted 15 million viewers.

As Korean dramas and domestic series are the most popular types in this region, Vidio's having tapped on it early were spot on.

The news report also noted how other steaming platforms such as Netflix and Disney+ have set out to bank in on such TV shows.
