#Showbiz: M'sians hoping for Michelle Yeoh to win an Oscar

KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh, Malaysia's very own Hollywood actress, has already won several awards for her role in the movie Everything Everywhere All At Once.

The icing on the cake would be winning the coveted Oscar for Best Actress at the 95th Academy Awards show, set to take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles tonight (local time).

Yeoh, 60, who became the first Malaysian to receive an Oscar nomination Golden Globe award winner on Jan 11 for her lead role in the 2022 movie, is expected to be the subject of great interest and support from Malaysians who are rooting for her to snag the award.

Businessman Dino Jaafar, who watched the movie, said Yeoh deserved to win the Oscar for her portrayal of Evelyn Wang in the sci-fi flick, which required her to play various characters with different personalities.

"She needed to sort of split herself up like someone with multiple personalities...which is quite a feat, especially when getting into one character alone would take quite an effort for any actor to deliver his/her best.

"I'm saying this not because I'm merely rooting for her to win the Oscar just so we Malaysians can finally claim another 'victory for Malaysia', but she really deserved it.

"And in this film, Yeoh had shown us something totally different from all the characters she has played before. Her performance in this film was just next level remarkable," added Dino.

Meanwhile, fashion stylist Tia Syazana said if Yeoh won this award, it would be another achievement for the actress.

"We can all be happy for her and make all the claims we want since she did come from this country and her family are still living in Ipoh, are they not?"

For interior decorator Jet Joe, the movie and Evelyn had turned him into an instant fan of Yeoh.

"I had never been a fan before this film. But Evelyn had proven to be Yeoh's best performance.

"Even the martial arts sequence in this movie, seemed to have worked well with the storyline and Yeoh's acting. So to me, the Oscar is already hers."

The actress is only the second Asian to have ever received a nomination for Best Actress and stands the highest chance of being the first to win the coveted award.

The Academy Awards, aimed at recognising the best achievements in the American film industry, is held annually and will be aired live on various platforms at 8am tomorrow (Malaysian time).
