#Showbiz: Malaysians congratulate Michelle Yeoh for Oscar win

KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh, 60, has been trending on social media after winning Best Actress for her role in "Everything Everywhere All At Once" at the 95th Academy Awards ceremony this morning.

Many local celebrities congratulated the Ipoh-born actress for her win, which makes her the first Malaysian to win an Oscar.

She is also the first Asian actress to win the Best Actress award.

Actor Hairul Azreen said "Tahniah!", while actress Melissa Campbell wrote, "Thank you for paving the way".

Dr Soo Wincci, Marion Caunter, Daphne Iking, Carmen Soo and Helen Yap all chimed in with their compliments and good wishes.

Singer Bob Yusof said: "Congratulations, Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh, we Malaysians are so proud of you."

Indonesian singer Anggun said, "This is historical."

The National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) said: "Finas would like to congratulate Malaysia-born actress Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh, who has created history by winning Best Actress at the 95th Academy Awards for her role in 'Everything Everywhere All At Once'.

"This achievement makes her the first Asian star to win in that category in the history of the Oscars."

Muar member of parliament Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said: "Such incredible talent is a testament to how big of an inspiration she is to all women and Malaysians."

Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh tweeted: "Most inspiring quote for all of us aunties – 'Ladies, don't let anybody ever tell you that you are past your prime' – Michelle Yeoh."

Meanwhile, cinema chain GSC contributed to the celebratory atmosphere with a cheeky entry.

"Malaysians after Michelle Yeoh won: Besok ada cuti tak? (Will tomorrow be a public holiday?)"

Aside from Yeoh's win, 'Everything Everywhere All At Once' won six other Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Screenplay and Best Editing.

The sci-fi metaverse action drama is being re-screened at GSC as part of its Oscars rerun campaign.
