#JOM! REVIEW: In Colonial, Kuala Lumpur

OFFERING Halal Anglo-Chinese cuisine, In Colonial located at The Intermark Kuala Lumpur is a place to be whenever you're craving for some Dim Sum!

While the restaurant is quite a popular pick for office-goers in the city due to its central location, it is also an ideal place for a casual family dining.

As it is owned by a Muslim entreprenuer, the restaurant serves no pork, lard and alcohol. So, Muslim diners can rest assure.

EAT

Menu is quite extensive, honestly. There are noodles and rice items and an assortment of Chinese cuisine like steamed fish, wok-fried beef, KungPao chicken and many more.

It also offers a Quick Lunch menu that is priced at RM32 only from noon to 2pm on weekdays.

The menu changes daily but you have two options per day - plus it comes with a complimentary drink of either ice lemon tea, Sprite, Coke or mineral water.

There's Chicken Chop Ala Thai or Sweet and Sour Fish Fillet on Monday, Mongolian Chicken or Fish Fillet Basted with Mango Sauce on Tuesday, Sweet and Sour Chicken or Fish Fillet with Lemon Sauce on Wednesday, Chicken Chop with Mango Sauce or Hot and Sour Fish Fillet on Thursday and Steamed Herbal Chicken or Fish Fillet in Buttery Pepper Sauce on Friday.

This fast-set pick is definitely for those on-the-go especially the fast-paced office diners.

However, if you're a light eater, you can opt for the Dimsum Fiesta afternoon tea menu that is served from 2pm to 6pm for just RM59.90 per set (for two people).

The set offers cold sliced marinated chicken roll with shredded jellyfish for appetiser, followed by dim sum selections of two pieces each such as steamed chicken and prawn dumplings, steamed Siew Mai, crispy chicken dumpling with mayonnaise, fried spring roll with cheese, mini crispy barbeque puff as well as Loh Mai Kai which is a steamed glutinous rice.

The set also comes with dessert such as egg tart, pandan buns and red bean buns as well as a selection of coffee or tea.

PICK

Not sure what to pick? Well… the restaurant offers a Degustation Menu which is a tasting menu of some of its specialties, the very reason why I am here.

These are some of the selections by the chef, and we start with the signature drink called the 1000 Punch Mocktail - a really sweet and sour drink made of blended orange, watermelon, pineapple and laced with passion fruit syrup topped with sprite and a zest of lemon in crushed ice. It is quite a refreshing welcome drink to kick off our palette.

Then we are served with the must-try steamed dimsum and dishes like prawn Siew Mai which is made of freshly-made paste for the fillings, BBQ chicken bao, prawn rolled in bean with curd skin.

My favourite of all dishes is the steamed chicken wings - which is quite unique as the chicken is chopped in small pieces and marinated in special sauce before it is steamed and served hot.

For the fried dimsum, there are few selections that have been served but one of the dishes that stands out the most is the Crispy Duck pancake wrap which basically consists of tender crispy duck, popiah skin as well as garnishing and sauce.

The staff kindly shows us how to do and eat it - take the popia skin and lay it flat on the plate, lather some Hoisin sauce on it and place on the duck and two garnishes - cucumber and spring onion, before wrapping the popiah skin. As simple as it sounds and looks, the Crispy Duck pancake wrap is surprisingly delicious.

For the mains, I would highly recommend the signature fish fillet pot (RM66) which is a delicious garoupa fillet with assorted vegetables, infused in the tasty sourish (almost like tomyam) soup, served in hotpot.

Another dish that might seem simple but taste good is the Hong Kong Beef Noodle, which has that charred flavour - perfectly cooked Chinese-style.

If you like seafood, the prawn in buttermilk sauce as well as the steamed scallops are two of the restaurant's best sellers.

MOOD

As the name suggests, the interior of the restaurants is very vintage colonial style with white walls and old-style doors, as well as dark wood floorings and marble tables.

It gives me a kopitiam feel, but elegantly decorated so that it looks more grandeur.

The restaurant is an ideal place for an intimate dining experience including birthday celebrations, luncheon and many more.

For large group dining, the restaurant also offers bigger dining tables complete with spinning lazy susan - so you can order a large number of dishes to share.

Private parties can also be hosted here. In fact, they have qualified and experienced event coordinators that can assist guests from planning out invitations to creating delectable menu choices.

The restaurant can accommodate up to 160 guests for buffet style set-ups and also up to 120 guests for seated dining with round tables at their main dining room.

There are also three cosy private rooms which each can hold up to 30 pax for private dining.
