JOM! SHOP: Light and easy-to-wear Speed Lite pack

THE frameless Deuter Speed Lite 24SL doesn't look impressive in its plastic packaging. Safe for its eye-catching bright blue-turquoise colours, the backpack looks light and limp.

Yes, it is super light - only 790gm to be exact. But once the backpack is out of its plastic, the firmness of its fabric is the first thing that catches my attention.

While I am easily bordered by things unstructured or out of shape, especially shapeless, lopsided backpacks as it can be a nuisance, Deuter Speed Lite 24Lis quick to prove me wrong.

HARDY BUT COMFY

Not only is its nylon-polyester material sturdy and hardy, its unbreakable frame made of elastic spring steel keeps the mesh "in shape".

And when the backpack is loaded, the gap between the body of the pack and the back is preserved. This gives somewhat of the needed ventilation especially after a long day of hike.

In its product brief, a certification agency Hohenstein Institute verified Deuter's Aircomfort carry system offers superior ventilation that results in 25% less sweat, which is proven to increase performance.

With its fully ventilated shoulder straps and wrap-around hip fins, the pack gives a snug body-hugging fit and distributes the load across the hips and shoulders. This relieves pressure on shoulders and spine.

It is also easy on the back, thanks to its three-dimensional ergonomically shaped hip pads that wrap around the pelvis. The pads transfer the load of the backpack from the back on the hips. And since it is an SL model, the backpack is specially designed to suit female anatomy by offering a carrying system that is somewhat shorter than in Deuter standard backpacks.

The S-shaped shoulder straps that Deuter is well-known for are designed to take the strain off the neck and shoulders, and at the same time give extra freedom of movement.

I particularly appreciate these straps and the hip fins as they don't make me feel like I am carrying a backpack behind but instead makes me feel the backpack is part of my shirt.

POCKETS AND MORE POCKETS

Deuter Speed Lite 24SL is huge. Its main compartment, for a light packer like me, is good enough to pack for more than two nights.

It is so huge that its depth is almost as long as my arm-reach, okay may I just have short limbs!

Then, there are pockets, and pockets! There are two side pockets that look good enough to hold a huge water bottle, hipbelt pockets - each large enough to hold a couple energy bars but not enough to keep a standard size handphone and an ample top pocket that comes with an internal key clip.

The front stuff pocket covers almost three-quarters of the pack's length, which means it is quite huge to fit in a rain jacket or other compressible layer. There are straps too, a lot of them.

VERDICTS

I am a bit on the fence when it comes to its size. The pack is a tad too long for my short torso and too big for a day hike.

For someone who likes things to be simple and clean, the pack has too many straps that from a far they look like dangling frills.

Like my other Deuter backpacks, I like the material and colour of the Speed Lite 24L. But what I love the most is its easy-to-wear design that makes it fit to my day like a body-hugging shirt. Yes, that's right, it's easy to wear and carry too!
