Proton confirms the D-segment X90, preview session begins April 8

PROTON has finally confirmed details of its latest X90 sports utility vehicle (SUV).

Positioned as a D-segment SUV, the X90 is the largest X series model in the national automaker's present lineup.

Four variants ranging from Standard to Flagship will be available in 6 or 7-seater configuration. Design highlight includes a redesigned Ethereal Bow and diamond-shaped Infinite Weave grilled at the front which is inspired by songket patterns.

It will be assembled at Proton's Tanjung Malim plant alongside the X50 and X70.

As previously mentioned this will be Proton's first mild-hybrid electric vehicle (MHEV) model as well as their entry into the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) market.

At the heart of the X90 is the 48V Electric Motor Synergy (EMS) System that integrates six key components which includes the 48V Belt-Starter Generator (BSG) motor, the DCDC converter, 48V Lithium-Ion Battery, Battery Management System, Recuperation Braking System, and the Hybrid Module Control System.

The 48V EMS provides an additional boost of 13PS and 45Nm. This when paired to a 1.5L TGDi engine and 7-speed dualclutch transmission (DCT) gives the combined powertrain an output of 190PS and 300Nm.

It is the sole available powertrain, which has received accolades in markets such as China and the Philippines, announced for the X90.

Proton says that this system not only enhances fuel efficiency and lowers emissions but also delivers additional power and torque for improved performance.

"Proton is proud to continue playing a leading role in the development of the local automotive industry. The X90 as our first mid-hybrid model, showcasing innovative technologies and intelligent solutions that empower our customers. The 48V EMS System delivers improved fuel efficiency, performance, and reduced emissions, and represents our first step into the NEV segment," said Proton chief executive officer Dr Li Chunrong.

The official launch date and prices have yet to be announced. Preview sessions on the other hand will start on April 8 across six cities with booking orders to be announced soon.
