Two nabbed for posing as royal family member, using fake 'Datuk' title

KOTA BARU: Police detained two men for using a fake 'Datuk' title and impersonating members of the royal family here recently.

Kelantan police chief Datuk Shafien Mamat said police detained the first suspect in Machang on Feb 27.

The 48-year-old civil servant was arrested for using a fake 'Datuk' title.

"In a follow-up operation on the same day, police detained the second suspect in Tanah Merah.

"He claimed to be a member of Kelantan royalty," he told a Press conference here today.

Shafien said the two were arrested after police received a report from the Kelantan palace on individuals using fake 'Datuk' titles.

He said police seized various documents, "Datukship" cards, charts of the Kelantan palace and state governments as well as stamps from the two suspects.

"Initial investigations found the duo have been involved in their activity since last year.

"But we have yet to determine how many people have been cheated by the two as investigations are still ongoing."

Shafien said the Kelantan palace has never issued any cards for people who were bestowed datukships from the Sultan.

"Therefore, the police urge those who may have been cheated or those who received fake Datuk titles, to come forward," he said.
