Cops sent to disperse crowd have firecrackers thrown at them

KUALA LUMPUR: A team of policemen had firecrackers thrown at them while trying to disperse a crowd playing the pyrotechnics just after the stroke of midnight at PPR Sri Perak in Bandar Baru Sentul today.

Sentul District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Beh Eng Lai said police received a complaint about a large crowd gathered below the low-cost housing apartment and a team was rushed to the scene.

He said upon arriving, police found a group of individuals believed to be residents of the apartment playing with firecrackers in the parking area.

Beh said the situation became intense when the crowd saw the policemen and more firecrackers were lit.

"Police officers on duty warned the public to stop playing with firecrackers, but they ignored and continued.

"While the police were dispersing the crowd, suddenly a loud explosion was heard when someone threw firecrackers at a policeman, almost injuring him," he said in a statement today.

Beh said the crowd however started to disperse after the explosion.

"Fortunately no one was injured in the incident. The case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code as well as Section 3 (5) of the Minor Offenses Act for criminal intimidation and letting off fireworks."
