2 teens and 1 adult nabbed for playing with illegal firecrackers

KUALA LUMPUR: Sentul police arrested three people, including two teenagers, for playing with illegal firecrackers at the PPR Sri Perak, Bandar Baru Sentul, here last night, while another man was arrested for the sale of illegal firecrackers.

Sentul District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Beh Eng Lai said police carrying out routine patrols first arrested three suspects, aged 44, 13 and 12, on the 11th floor of Block 33.

In the 9pm incident, upon inspection police also found that the 13-year-old suspect had with him 58 of the illegal ball-shaped crackers in his bag.

"Upon questioning the suspect, the police were led to another 58-year-old man's unit at Block 39 at 11pm.

Checks at the second unit led to the discovery of 130 of the same type of firecrackers and a few other types as well.

It is learnt that the fourth suspect had been illegally selling the firecrackers to the people living there.

Beh said the three suspects arrested earlier were cleared of being involved in a firecracker throwing incident, which happened a day earlier.

"Since there was no evidence pointing at the three, they were only investigated under the Section 3 (5) of the Minor Offenses Act 1955 for burning prohibited firecrackers.

"The fourth suspect was investigated under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1958 for possession and sale of the prohibited firecrackers," he said.

He said all four suspects were released on police bail after it was determined they were not involved in the firecracker attack on a policeman on the eve of Hari Raya.

In the incident, a group of residents were said to have been causing nuisance to the other residents at the stroke of midnight by playing with loud firecrackers at the PPR parking lot.

Policemen tried to diffuse the situation but it only got worse when the residents saw them.

One of the residents allegedly threw the firecrackers towards a policeman who was trying to disperse the crowd.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident, as the policeman managed to dodge the firecrackers in the nick of time.

Police are still looking for those responsible for the attack.
