Police bust online gambling syndicate

JOHOR BARU: Police here busted an online gambling syndicate following a raid on a house used as a call centre in Johor Jaya yesterday evening.

Seri Alam police chief Superintendent Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said the house in Taman Sunway, Bukit Lenang was used as a call centre for the syndicate that is operating overseas.

"During the raid, 10 suspects consisting six men and four women aged between 20 and 30 were arrested.

"We also seized 11 computers, 46 mobile phones, a file containing suspected gambling records, 143 SIM cards, a modem, router and 14 ATM cards," Sohaimi said in a statement.

He said the syndicate's modus operandi was to use the house as an online money transfer and withdrawal transaction centre for online gambling operating overseas.

"The syndicate has been operating at the house for about two months and recorded between RM50,000 and RM100,000 in transactions a day," said Sohaimi.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 4(1)(g) of the Common Gambling House Act 1953 and the suspects have been remanded until May 21 to help in the investigation.
