GEORGE TOWN: Police have detained another man to assist investigations into a break-in at Penang Island City Council (MBPP) Mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang's official residence along Jalan Park, Pulau Tikus here on Saturday.

This brings to five, the total number of people arrested so far.

State police chief Datuk Sahabudin Abd Manan said the 32-year-old man was nabbed in Balik Pulau early this morning.

"The fifth suspect was picked up early this morning and with his arrest, we believe we have solved the break-in incident at the mayor's official residence.

"Following the arrest of the five men, we have also managed to retrieve some of the items stolen from the house," he said today.

All the five men, aged between 25 and 37, are currently under remand to assist investigations under Sections 457 dan 379A of the Penal Code.

On Saturday, police detained four men, including two brothers, in connection with the break-in at the mayor's official residence, an hour after the incident.

The four were picked up during a raid at a house in Jalan Pantai Bersih, Butterworth at about 10.15am after police received a report about the break-in.

It is learnt that the break-in was realised by a family member, who found the house in a mess.

Further checks showed several belongings and a vehicle missing, which included a Honda CRV, branded bags, foreign currency and a laptop.

Checks on the closed circuit television (CCTV) camera footage showed the men entering the double-storey house at about 5am.
