1MDB trial to resume next Monday

KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) trial will resume on July 5.

Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Ahmad Akram Gharib said the trial which was initially scheduled to continue yesterday (Tuesday), was postponed due to the extension of the Movement Control Order (MCO) in the first phase of the National Recovery Plan (NRP).

"We received an email yesterday in the afternoon informing that the case had been vacated and based on the schedule, the next trial dates will be from July 5 to 8," he said when contacted.

The trial before High Court judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah was last heard on May 27.

Najib's lawyer Wan Aizuddin Wan Mohammed is expected to continue cross-examining the 10th prosecution witness, former 1MDB chief executive officer Mohd Hazem Abdul Rahman when the trial resumes.

Najib, 68, was charged with 25 counts of abuse of power and money laundering involving RM2.28 billion of 1MDB funds which were deposited into his accounts between 2011 and 2014.

He faces 20 years' jail and fine, if convicted.
