Former beauty queen charged with punching a cop, consuming drugs

KUALA LUMPUR: A former beauty queen was charged at the Petaling Jaya magistrate's court today with punching a policeman and drug abuse.

Kohinoor Damodaran Kaittiani, 29, who was Miss Universe Malaysia 2015 finalist, however, pleaded not guilty to both charges before magistrate Zhafran Rahim Hamzah.

According to the charge sheet, the accused had allegedly used criminal force by punching Corporal Sharularifin Sarmadan near Jalan Universiti about 3am on Thursday.

She was charged under Section 353 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum two years jail or fine or both upon conviction.

She was also charged with abusing dangerous drug Tetrahydrocannabinol at the Petaling Jaya police headquarters at 2pm on the same date.

The offence falls under Section 15(1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries a maximum five years' jail and RM20,000 fine on conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Lau Chia Xin asked the court to impose RM5,000 bail against the accused.

However, Counsel Datin Raj Preet Kaur pleaded for minimum bail stating that her client's restaurant was closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The court set RM3,000 bail for all charges and fixed Oct 6 for mention.

During the same proceedings, Kohinoor's friend Quek Shen Tying, 33, was also slapped with abusing drugs at the same place and time.

The court set RM1,500 bail and fixed Oct 1 for mention.

It was reported that a former beauty queen was arrested after she allegedly crashed into a roadblock on the Federal Highway near Petaling Jaya before punching a policeman.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Fakhruddin Abdul Hamid said the suspect, believed to be under the influence of alcohol, was driving her vehicle from the city centre towards Petaling Jaya with a friend seated beside her when she arrived at the roadblock about 3am.

"The woman did not stop her vehicle and instead crashed through the roadblock.

"A police patrol vehicle gave chase and she was eventually detained.

"The woman became even more aggressive when she was stopped and punched a policeman who tried to arrest her," he added.
