Penang Hindu Endowment Board executive director seriously injured in attack

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A senior citizen sustained serious injuries after he was attacked by four men outside his house in Taman Alma, Machang Bubok here last night.

The motive behind the attack is not immediately known.

Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shafee Abd Samad said police were alerted to the attack on the 70-year-old victim at about 9.15pm.

"Investigation revealed the victim was attacked with sharp objects by four men outside his house here.

"He sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the Bukit Mertajam Hospital for treatment. He is reported to be in a stable condition," he said.

The case is probed under Section 326 of the Penal Code.

Shafee urged those who witnessed the incident to contact the police to assist in investigations.

Earlier this morning, Deputy Chief Minister II Professor Dr P. Ramasamy said on his Facebook page that Datuk M. Ramachandran, the executive director of the Penang Hindu Endowment Board (PHEB), was assaulted by three or four unknown assailants at his house at about 7pm yesterday.

Ramasamy said it appeared that as soon as Ramachandran stepped out of his car, he was pounced upon by the assailants.

"(Datuk) Rama, who is 70 years old received cuts all over his body, although his condition is not described as serious. He was admitted to the emergency ward of the BM Hospital yesterday after the incident.

"I visited him around 10pm yesterday, even managing to have a few words with him. He was conscious enough to ask me whether he was attacked or not.

"I told him he was attacked," he said in the Facebook posting.

Ramasamy also said that Ramachandran was transferred to the Seberang Jaya Hospital last night.

He said a police report was lodged yesterday by Ramachandran's wife and son-in-law after the incident.

He added that police were investigating the possible suspects behind the cowardly attack.
