Court allows Kit Siang's application in suit against former IGP

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court has allowed Lim Kit Siang's application to amend the statement of claims in his defamation suit against former Inspector-General (IGP) Tun Mohammed Hanif Omar and Syarikat Sinar Karangkraf Sdn Bhd.

The suit is over Mohammed Hanif's speech at a convention centre, three years ago.

Lim's counsel Sangeet Kaur Deo said the court has allowed Lim to include in the statement of claims remarks by Mohammed Hanif in verbatim.

Sangeet said the court also ordered for parties to file the amended cause papers before Sept 6 and maintained the trial dates which were previously fixed from Sept 20 to 23.

The proceeding today was conducted online before judicial commissioner Quay Chew Soon.

Lim filed the suit on Oct 17, 2018, claiming that the ex-top cop had in an interview alleged that the DAP veteren leader had intentionally ordered the party to split Peninsular Malaysia into two, to divide the Malay and the Chinese.

Lim who is Iskandar Puteri Member of Parliament (MP) claimed that Mohammed Hanif made the statement at the 'Karamah Bangsa' convention in Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Shah Alam on Sept 6, the same year.

The statement, Lim claimed, had ruined his reputation as an MP and public figure.

Previously, Lim had named Mohammed Hanif as the sole defendant in the suit.

In March, last year, the court granted Lim's application to name Syarikat Sinar as the second defendant.

He had sought to add the media publishing company as a defendant on grounds that it had published the defamatory statement by Mohammed Hanif.
