SOP violation compound against Kit Siang triggers spat between Khairy and Najib

KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry has issued a RM1,000 fine against Iskandar Puteri member of Parliament, Lim Kit Siang, for hugging party members during DAP's 17th National Congress last weekend.

Lim tested positive for Covid-19 on Monday, and shortly after that, Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who attended the event, also tested positive for the virus.

Announcing the decision, Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin posted a snapshot of the compound issued against Lim on his Twitter today.

In doing so, Khairy also took a swipe at former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak by offering him a "friendly reminder" to settle a compound that was issued against the Pekan member of Parliament during the Johor state election campaign period.

"The ministry also hopes that Najib will accept another four compounds that have been sent to him through post, which his officer previously refused to accept," he said in the tweet.

Khairy's rebuke towards Najib came after the latter questioned the ministry's reluctance to fine DAP members who were seen hugging Lim after he announced his retirement from politics at the congress.

Responding to Khairy's tweet today, Najib questioned Khairy for singling out Lim although many other DAP members were sighted hugging the veteran politician.

"Why only Kit Siang was fined? That too, with only a RM1,000 compound that was issued yesterday. But, there were dozens of party members hugging him.

"I'm puzzled as to why he (Khairy) related Kit Siang's fine to me but I will pay all five compounds issued against me," Najib said in a Facebook post today.
