Couple nabbed with smuggled firecrackers

PASIR MAS: A couple was arrested in possession of various types of firecrackers worth more than RM17,000 here last night.

Pasir Mas district police chief Assistant Commissioner Nasaruddin Md Nasir said the 38-year-old man and his 42-year-old wife were travelling in a car when they were stopped at Kampung Lati-Lubok Setol.

"A police patrol car spotted the vehicle passing the area at about midnight and ordered the driver to stop for inspection.

"Upon checking, they found boxes and plastic packages containing the firecrackers. They later detained the couple," he said in a statement.

Mohd Nasaruddin said initial investigations showed that the firecrackers were smuggled in from Thailand.

"We suspect the banned items were brought in from an illegal jetty at the border and were to be distributed to local traders," he added.

During the operation, he said police also seized the car worth RM55,000.

"The man who is from Pahang and the woman, a local, are being held for further action," he added.

Mohd Nasaruddin expected more firecrackers to be smuggled into Kelantan in the coming days to meet the demands for Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
