Police nab man abusing stray cats in Semeling

SUNGAI PETANI: SUNGAI PETANI: Police have arrested a sadistic man who took pleasure in abusing stray cats in Semeling early yesterday.

Kuala Muda police chief Assistant Commissioner Zaidy Che Hassan said the man, in his 20s, was arrested today.

"The suspect was detained at his home in Kampung Pengkalan Merbok about 1.30pm today.

"We will apply for a remand order against the suspect at Sungai Petani Magistrate's Court tomorrow morning," he said in a statement.

Zaidy said the carcass of a cat was found at the suspect's house but was not the one abused in a video clip that has gone viral.

"The cat that appeared on the CCTV recording being abused by the suspect survived the attack and has been handed over to the Veterinary Services Department," he said, declining to elaborate.

In the 1.10am incident, the suspect was caught on CCTV arriving in front of a shop in Semeling.

He was seen alighting from a white Perodua Bezza to feed a stray cat.

However, as the cat was feeding, the man suddenly grabbed a palm-sized stone and threw it at the cat's head.

The poor animal was seen shaking violently as blood oozed from its head.

Apparently still not satisfied, the man had then went to the back alley of the premises and used the same tactic to lure another stray cat.

This time, he intentionally kicked the cat before leaving.

Unknown to the man, his inhumane act was recorded by the shop's CCTV and was uploaded by a Facebook user yesterday.

The footage has earned over 5,000 shares, drawing fierce criticism from Facebook users.

Zaidy said, based on initial investigation, the suspect was said to be suffering from an emotional breakdown after being left jobless.

"His family members claimed that the suspect was a cat lover and had previously owned several cats," he said.
