Tumpat police nab arson suspect

TUMPAT: Police detained a man suspected to have burned down a house in Kampung Geting here yesterday.

In the 4.30am incident, police said the 75-year-old victim and his wife spotted a man standing outside their house. The man then threw an object onto the roof before fleeing.

"The house quickly caught fire. The couple said they managed to save a car and a motorcycle during the fire," Tumpat police chief Assistant Commissioner Amran Dollah said in a statement.

He said the victims estimated their losses at about RM350,000.

Following the incident, he said police picked up the suspect, in his 30s, who tested positive for drugs.

The case is being investigated under Section 436 of Penal Code for mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy house or other properties.
