Lorry driver who caused death of four family members charged [NSTTV]

IPOH: A lorry driver who ploughed through six vehicles, killing four members of a family at KM277.1 of the North-South Expressway was charged with reckless driving today.

Suhaimi Mohd Nor, 34, however, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him before magistrate Noor Hafiza Ishak.

He was charged with driving recklessly and causing the death of Rahim Ramli, 60; his wife Siti Petimah Omar, 59; and daughters Nor Hadirah, 28, and Nor Hamizah, 27.

The accused was alleged to have committed the offence at KM277.1 of the North-South Expressway at 2.55pm on July 13.

The charge was filed under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 which carries a jail term of no less than five years and not more than 10 years, and a fine of no less than RM20,000 and up to RM50,000, upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor N.M Moganaraj Mithra proposed the court to impose RM40,000 bail but Suhaimi's lawyer, Amir Khusyairi Mohamad Tanusi pleaded for a lower amount.

"My client is now jobless after the incident. He's the sole breadwinner and has a wife and five children where the youngest is two-years-old.

"He has also given full cooperation during the investigations," he said.

The court then set RM8,000 bail with one surety from his family member and suspended the accused's driving license until the disposal of the case.

The court also fixed Aug 4 for mention.

It was reported the victims were travelling in their Proton Persona on their way to Kuala Lumpur from Sungai Petani, Kedah.

The driver of the Proton Persona and the three passengers were pinned to their seats and pronounced dead at the scene by a medical team.

The trailer driver who hails from Rawang, Selangor, had 13 traffic summonses from 2018 to last year with three of them involving road accident cases in 2012, 2020 and 2021.
