Police detain two men over parang attack on security guard

SUNGAI PETANI: Police have detained two men over an attack on a security guard, leaving the victim with serious slash wounds yesterday.

Kuala Muda police chief Assistant Commissioner Zaidy Che Hassan said the suspects, aged 41 and 37, were detained after the 4pm incident.

"The 58-year-old victim was on duty at a construction site in Bukit Banyan, Sungai Petani, when he was attacked by three men armed with parang.

"The victim was rushed to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital for slash wounds to the head and arms," Zaidy said in a statement.

He said investigations found that prior to the attack, the victim had reprimanded one of the suspects for riding a motorcycle recklessly near the site.

It was learnt that the victim, from Taman Ria Jaya here, is an army veteran.

Zaidy said the 37-year-old suspect, also from Taman Ria Jaya, had a criminal record of drug abuse and armed robbery.

"We have obtained a week-long remand order against the duo beginning today," he said, adding that police were tracking down the third suspect in the assault.

The case has been classified under Section 326 of the Penal Code, which carries up to 20 years' jail and a fine or whipping, upon conviction.
