Police: 4-month-old baby allegedly dies from suffocation at babysitter's house

KUALA LUMPUR: A 4-month-old baby boy died yesterday at his babysitter's home in Taman Cempaka, Ampang Jaya, purportedly as a result of suffocating from a diaper on his face while in a spring cot cradle.

Ampang Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Farouk Eshak said the infant was brought to the emergency and trauma department of Ampang Hospital at 6.30pm.

He said an ambulance from Ampang Hospital was used to transport the infant from a clinic in Pandan Indah.

"He did not exhibit any signs of life, therefore attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

"The baby was pronounced dead at the hospital at 6.35pm. The cause of death is being investigated," he said in a statement today.

He said a police team from the Ampang Jaya Criminal Investigation Division arrested the 26-year-old Indonesian babysitter.

Initial checks showed that the suspect did not have any record of criminal or drug-related offences.

"The suspect said the baby suffocated due to a diaper found on his face while he was in the cradle," Farouk said, adding that the baby's parents were at work at the time of the incident.

Farouk said the suspect was taken to the Ampang Court this morning to be remanded under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for mistreatment, neglect, abandonment or exposing a child (to harm).
